Samsung DV300F dual-view camera adds Wi-Fi

Samsung continues to cater toward casual photographers who specialize in self-portraits, today announcing its latest DualView camera, the Samsung DV300F. In addition to a traditional LCD viewfinder, 16 megapixel resolution, and 5× optical zoom, the DV300F point-and-shoot camera features a front-facing 1.5-inch LCD display so users can easily see what they’re doing when they’re shooting…well, themselves. The new DV300F also features Wi-Fi connectivity, so users can instantly upload their photos and video to services like Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, and YouTube, as well as cloud services like Microsoft SkyDrive and Samsung’s own AllShare Play.

“Our aim is to continually be at the forefront of innovation and maintain our leadership within the DualView market, pioneered by Samsung,” said Samsung’s senior VP of digital imaging Myoung Sup Han, in a statement. “This latest model with the DualView LCD, Wi-Fi connectivity, ultra premium styling and the latest creative features, demonstrates Samsung’s unwavering commitment to innovation within the digital compact camera market, as well as our ability to consistently meet the needs of our customers.”

Although the signature front-facing LCD display is aimed mainly at folks shooting those all-important self-portraits, Samsung has found another use for the display as well: a “Child Mode” that plays an animation on the front-facing display to “keep little ones focused”—and presumably looking at the camera. The DV300F stores images to microSD cards, and sports several consumer-oriented fun features designed to make the camera entertaining for casual photographers: a Magic Frame feature includes 12 background templates and enables users to create post-quality art, and a picture-in-picture enables users embed one image within another or combine a still picture with a video clip. The DV300F also packs a Motion Photo feature (that can “freeze time” around a mobile subject for dramatic effect) and an Artistic Brush feature for marking up and getting creative with images. And what point-and-shoot camera would be compete without a Funny Face feature that can produce bug eyes and wacky grins?

Samsung says the DV300F should be available in March for a suggested retail price of $199.
