First-time smartphone buyers in the US are opting to purchase Android devices rather than those running on Apple's iOS or other systems, according to a February report by analytics firm NPD.
The report found that among first-time smartphone buyers in the US throughout October to December 2011 the majority, 57 percent, opted for an Android device. This percentage is significantly higher than Android's US share of smartphone unit sales which is around 48 percent.
However despite the dominance of Android, Apple's iOS was also relatively popular among first-time buyers, accounting for 34 percent of the market, nine percent lower than its total share of unit sales in the US which NPD places at 43 percent.
In both cases, among first-time buyers and the total market, the market share of unit sales of other devices remained at nine percent.
NPD attributes the popularity of Android devices among firs- time buyers to the availability of devices across a wide range of carriers, the availability of cheaper, mid-range, Android devices and the variety of design of smartphones running on the Android system.
The findings by NPD are supported by a January 18 report by Nielsen which found that 51.7 percent of US consumers who had purchased a smartphone in the three months prior to December 2011 had chosen an Android device, with only 37 percent having purchased an iOS device.
